Not very helpful in Language ArtsMar 15, 2012

"Here. Now."
I was hoping for much more down-to-earth writing, but this has a strictly academic slant to it. As a Language Arts teacher, I found nothing in here that was new or different--graphic organizers, "The Hero in Literature" (Prentice Hall does this, too), etc. I even found it rather annoying in some ways. One teacher suggests playing the song "Mrs. Robinson" for your class just for the one line, "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" And how are the other lines ("Jesus loves you more than you will know") relevant? And one teacher seems to focus almost exclusively on the older canon-based materials rather than contemporary, relevant works (and yes, I've heard all the arguments about how the older works are universal and always relevant. That doesn't always help in the classroom, though).
In short, it was disappointing and not very helpful. There isn't much presented that has universal appeal as opposed to being fitting for the teacher's personal style and focus, and the book tries to be everything for everyone--all of the material on teaching math and social studies and art is completely irrelevant to me. My time could best be spent elsewhere, on something more focused and relevant.
