5Loved this issue so much, I bought all the other volumesAug 19, 2010

What I love about the 'Calling All Cooks' cookbooks is that they contain recipes for comfort foods you had when you grew up, like for casseroles, oatmeal cookies, and corn bread. It's definitely not pretentious!

And it has several recipes for each thing, so you can pick out or combine the ones you like. That's particularly handy if you don't have some ingredient for one version and can just choose another or figure how to ad lib.

There are great recipes that combine yellow cake mixes, instant pudding and other short cut ingredients that allow you to make quick semi-pre-prepared but still homemade goodies.

Although I love that each recipe includes the names of the contributors, which makes it more personal, there's one minor downside as a result of the 'informal' presentation: they don't always include specifics, so you sometimes have to guess at sizes or amounts. So, a recipe might call for a large tub of cool whip. Is that the 8 oz, 12 oz, or 16 oz size? Or a large can of condensed milk....well, the ounce count depends on the brand.

I received volume 2 as a present, and it is the most dog-eared cookbook in my collection. So, I just bought all the other volumes!
