I'm a long-time fan of the Dr. Fry series of books. Not every book is particularly useful for the classroom teacher, but this book is definitely a must-have!
I made copies of his informal tests right before report card time, and it was a *huge* help having these papers to show the parents. I can finally give concrete evidence that no, little Johnny *cannot* read War and Peace! :-)
Seriously, as a teacher it showed me where I might be failing my children, and pointed out areas that I needed to either cover or review.
I can see this book being helpful, from a gifted Kindergarten all the way up to 6th grade. Parents, I heartily recommend this book to help you see where your child needs the most help (or, if only to prove to yourself that you *do* have a genius at home!) :-)

Dr. Fry's resources are always excellent. This set of assessments covers all of the basics. There are comprehension tests for oral and silent reading, letter recognition tests, onset-rime tests, phonics tests and several others. Nice addition for a diagnostic prescriptive program.

Well worth buying as it gives you another angle to approach reading assessment through. It is non threatening for reluctant readers and they are more willing to go through the assessment process.
