He was employed by Judge Reuben Saffold at Pleasant Hill in Dallas County as a teacher for about a dozen children of local landowners, but his principal interest was natural history. During the eight months he lived in th Black Belt he watched, listened, thought, took notes, and made sketches--activities that eventually led to Letters from Alabama. He lived among Alabamians, talked and listened to them, saw them at their best and their worst, and came to understand their hopes and fears. They were a part of the natural world, and he paid attention to them as any good scientist would. With the skills of a scientist and the temperament of an artist, Gosse set down an account of natural life in frontier Alabama that has no equal. Written to no one in particular, a common literary device of the period, the letters were first published in a magazine, and in 1859 appeared as a book. By that time Gosse was an established scholar and one of England’s most noted scientific illustrators.

Letters from AlabamaJul 06, 2009
By A. Stephen Johnson Extremely interesting book. Why haven't I heard of this one before? Fascinating look into the natural history of the ante-bellum South. His observations of extinct species like the Carolina Parakeet, Ivory-billed woodpecker, & Chestnut tree are priceless.

Pre Civil War Alabama from a outside viewAug 11, 2009
By D. J. Smith Anyone interested in the rural south in the first half of the 19th century, particularly Alabama, would be fascinated by this book. The comments of an early natualist, steamboat travel, family life, hunting, and his reaction to slavery are priceless. If you were interested enough to read this review you need to read this book.

Great for biology, entomology studentsJan 15, 2012
By Charles Montgomery I bought this because of my interest in history. Since I'm from Alabama, the title caught my eye and it was free on Kindle. It was fun to trace the author's trip from the NE Coast down to the keys and up to Mobile Bay. He went then up the Alabama River to the various homes he lived in while he studied and taught school in country schools of 1857 rural Alabama. I was particularly interested in the homes, way of life of farmers in 1857, and schools of that era since I taught for many years. In this respect the book was an enjoyable read. His few mentions of the practice of slavery were sad commentaries on the times.
The author's greatest interest seemed to be in the study of the various flora and fauna and particularly insects of the region. I have relatives whose families lived in the same localities where he lived while in Alabama and can place some of the old towns fairly accurately. The times were tough for everyone in as well as for the slaves. Life was pretty primitive then.
I had to skim over some of the detailed descriptions of flowers, bugs, and general biology . They were too deep for me.
Misled a littleDec 25, 2011

"I'm not from the south but I got here as fast as I could."
The book itself is pretty good, it's just not what I expected. My problems are that it hit when I typed in Civil War so with the title I thought it would be letters to soldiers during the Civil War. No description was given to tell me otherwise. So you know how it is when you expect one thing and then a couple chapters in you finally realize it isn't anything close to what you really wanted how the disappointment sets in? That's what this book did for me. On the plus side I am greatly appreciative of the price :) I don't think that any book is ever a total waste and I did learn a few things from this one.
delightful read despite the typosNov 30, 2011
By S. L. Brown This author was so far ahead of his time! I could see his descriptions, and his art is lovely. The kindle version is loaded with typos, but is still understandable. Minus two stars for typos, but plus one for being free = 4 stars.
