 A master researcher presents a master plan for reading interventionMar 31, 2009

"Man Who Knits"
Dr. Allington has bravely fought on the frontline of the "reading wars" for many years. He has always championed the sane, research-based, child- and teacher- friendly approach to teaching reading.
His very vocal critics, who were quite vicious at times, have been proven wrong by the complete and utter failure of their approaches through the corrupted Reading First program and the disaster of No Child Left Behind.
This book, first written 10 years ago, was a clarion call for sane, sensible approaches to teaching reading to all children. The basis of what is now the mandatory RTI (required under NCLB -- how ironic) is laid out is full research summaries of what actually works in this volume, with thorough explanations of approaches that actually help struggling readers.
Highly recommended for the serious, experienced professional who values research-based, proven strategies that aren't manipulated into a political agenda and who wish to avoid the latest fads and empty promises of quick fixes.

Allington is wise and thoughtful. There are so many programs being used to support the RTI model that are turning our children into little fluency machines... plotting their literacy on graphs that mean little or nothing to their literacy lives.
As educators, we should all read this book and Allington's other resources that bring the focus back to children, rather than programs. Read this book, you won't be disappointed!

Unfortunately, in reading this book, I found it rooted in the failed fad of whole-language learning and its stepchild Reading Recovery. The author makes some excellent points on various aspects of literacy that have been proven time and time again. Retention comes under attack and there is some insight into its failure. Being from CA, we don't see much retention here and looks like a great alternative to social promotioin. I might have to change my views after reading this book. Special ed is attacked by the author and has some good ideas about how NOT to work with those kids. It's worth reading if you have free time. However, I'd read something else if I had free time for only one book as it does not offer any real strategies to employ.
The worst part of the book is the horrible size font that my eyes struggle with. I opened it again just to check. SMALL!!!! wear your glasses!

Allington is far more focused on demeaning others than he is with offering positive strategies. His views are so tainted with bitter feelings toward educational giants.
