This workbook teaches the very basics of reading maps. It's been an easy workbook for my first graders, but they've enjoyed doing it.

I love that this workbook covers neighborhood geography (ex: recognizing landmarks), map reading (ex: symbols, directions), and globes (ex: continents, poles), but the organization was frustrating. It jumps back and forth between the topics. I would have preferred to start with globes, and then maps...preferably in world, country, state, city, street order...general to detailed. Also, it was nice to have perforated pages, but the last page of one section often had the first page of the next section on the other side, so my idea to pull out pages in the order I wanted to teach the topics didn't work so well.
This was a great addition to the geography section in What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know (Core Knowledge Series), and I even printed some satellite photos of our neighborhood from Mapquest to show how the info could be applied to our area.
I will definitely be using Scholastic Success With Maps Workbook Grade 2 next.

This whole wonderful series (Scholastic Success With Maps by Linda Ward Beech) is so much fun and perfect for asynchronous learners. It is so colorful and clear and beautiful. A great deal for a full-color workbook series that goes step-by-step through all the map reading and map using skills. Five stars for all five books!

"Love to Worship"
Up to this point, I have always been very pleased with everything Scholastic puts out. This is a good map review, but maybe a bit basic for the target age. After having successfully completed grades 1-3 of Basic Skills' "Map Skills" (which were excellent), the larger pictures and "kiddy" typeset in this Scholastic rendition was a bit youngish for my 3rd-grader. However, it is a good overview in terms of material and has worked for us in spite of its shortcomings in style.
