Description:

In this book, for the first time, national data is used to measure technology’s effectiveness on student academic performance in three subjects—mathematics, science, and reading. To uncover key implications for policy and practice, the author links the test scores of more than 40,000 students who took the National Assessment of Educational Progress with reports by their teachers of various aspects of technology use.

Features:
* The use of real data to show which practices are most prevalent and which are most effective in the K–12 classroom.
* A nontechnical presentation of the results of the only studies to relate aspects of technology use to student test scores.
* Case studies of traditionalist and constructivist uses of technology to determine which approach raises test scores the most, with and without technology.
* A summary with implications of what can be learned from the numbers, including suggestions for policymakers and practitioners.

5Views of Technology in the ClassroomApr 08, 2011
By Shannon Pinkowski
Initially I thought this reading was going to be a dry one as it is a requirement for a graduate class, however I was mistaken and have found it to me most interesting. Harold Wenglinsky discusses the argument between policy makers and educational researchers. There is a disagreement on whether or not computers have a significant role in the classroom. The author clearly illustrates the importance of technology use in the classroom and the role of the teacher. The book also provides an in-depth look at the difference between two teaching methods and discusses which method is more successful in regards to technology. The book mentions that there are educators who see technology as a tool to foster learning and many who do not. Some see it as a replacement of teachers and an improvement for schools while others believe that it reduces the opportunity for students to exchange ideas for higher order thinking. I believe that after reading his work, that the only way for a replacement of the teacher is if the teacher chooses it to be that way.

The issue that Harold Wenglinsky presents in the reading provides the reader with the idea that the problem is not the debate; the problem is that the debate has no relation with how schools are utilizing computers in the classroom. There is no discussion as to how schools should utilize such tools in the classroom. If there should be such a discussion, Wenglinsky believes that this would allow teachers the opportunity to take advantage of the resource. Its obvious from Wenglinsky's opinions that the constructivist approach to teaching is favored and those teachers should make use of the tool. While discussing the two teaching methods the history of the standards movement and technologies place in that movement are illustrated. Here I find that the author mentions the failures of teachers utilizing the tool in a positive manner results in why this argument remains. While I remain indifferent to his opinion I can assume that some may not agree with his views on why technology may not be successful in the classroom. I have seen for myself in a classroom where technology has failed our students but only because of the role that teacher plays when implementing its use.

Lastly using educational research, Wenglinsky paints a clear picture of the relation of various uses of technology for educational success using teachers, schools and students. He found that the constructivist approach to teaching resulted in the highest amount of student success and academic progression. He also noted that there were three subjects that utilized technology use the most; mathematics, science and reading.

5Using Technology WiselyMar 15, 2010
By Crystal Walters "Crystal Walters"
This book was definitely worth reading especially for its views on educational technology and discussion on constructivist vs. didactic pedagogy. The book is broken up into clear sections that address key points of educational technology, technology standards, teaching in schools, Critics of technology effectiveness, stories from educational technology and the digital divide in relation to No Child Left Behind Act. In the introduction the book addresses the two types of teaching: didactic and constructivist compares these two approaches according to positive effects on test scores. The author attempts to answer this question based on the use of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores in three subjects at four different grade levels. The author also discusses recent movements for improving schools, which are standards, technology, and improving teacher quality.

Wenglinsky supports teachers who use technology in the classroom in a constructivist manner which concentrates on problem solving and student driven projects for lessons. He also concludes the book with a section describing a significant "digital divide" between "white, affluent, suburban students" and "minority, poor and urban students". He encourages constructivist methods in schools in order to make technology education more effective.

I found Wenglinsky's book to relate to teaching strategies that teachers a using in their classes today. Project based learning, student centered and problem based learning are just a few of those ideas.

4Wenglinsky's Points Are Right OnApr 17, 2009
By Suzette Berry
I also read this book for a graduate class at Saint Rose. I felt that the book does a great job stressing the importance of technology in the classroom and where it is or is not appropriate. Wenglinsky makes a point that the use of technology in the classroom is directly linked to the increased standards put on teachers over the years, but if teachers are not willing to keep up with the changing technology, we are only hurting students. My favorite part of the book is Chapter 3 where Wenglinsky tells the stories of educational technology use in schools. Lastly, Wenglinsky supports all of his arguments with data from students in 4th and 8th grade. Being a mathematics teacher it was nice to see the breakdown of how computer can help my students. According to the research constructivist activities on the computer can help my students with their math skills.

5TED 574Apr 13, 2009
By Jennifer Hodlin
I am currently a grad student at the College of St. Rose. For a class that I am in this semester, the students were asked to read a book about technology. For this assignment I chose to read this book, Using Technology Wisely by Harold Wenglinsky. I found it to be an interesting book, which brought up many good and useful points about technology in the classroom.
To begin with, I found his discussion on constructivist vs. didactic pedagogy to be very interesting. He made the point that the didactic approach is the one that is seen in schools more often. Wenglinsky stated, "teachers using this kind of approach tend to use technology as a substitute for themselves." I, as a teacher, find this, on most occasions, to be true. Many times, teachers don't know how to properly integrate technology into what they are teaching. Therefore, they place students with technology and then go off and do their own thing. I think that while this kind of drill and practice approach is needed occasionally, it is more important to mold technology to what you are teaching instead of molding to technology. By not molding to technology, this is known as the constructivist approach.
In the constructivist approach, which was clearly Wenglinsky's favorite, he stated that technology is best used when its integrated and used only to help students confirm what they have already learned. This type of approach requires more work on the teacher's end and can be hard for teachers to do.
However, there are many different ways to integrate technology. During this class at St Rose, I have learned many different ways to properly integrate technology. For example, teachers can use webquests, simulations, or educational games. In the time that I have been teaching, I have seen teachers that have integrated technology very well. They are on the cutting edge of the new approach to teaching. Technology is all around us. Instead of fighting it, teachers should learn how to embrace it.

4Using Technology Wisely is Valuable to EducatorsApr 29, 2012
By Kendra A
I am currently a graduate student at The College of Saint Rose. I am pursuing a Masters in Educational Technology. I have read the book Using Technology Wisely: The Keys to Success in Schools by Harold Wenglinsky for a required assignment for one of the graduate course that I am enrolled in this spring 2012 semester, as well as it touches on my interest of improving the education of students inside the classroom.

Using Technology Wisely: The Keys to Success in Schools looks into the debate of whether or not the use of computers is necessary for students to succeed academically. The author explains the difference between constructivist and didactic pedagogies and how they play a role in student success. Wenglinsky revels to the reader that he feels that a constructivist teaching style has a greater impact on students than a didactic teaching style when technology is incorporated. He demonstrates how these teaching styles have an effect on the students' academic performance, specifically looking at reading, mathematics, and science. Data is reveled through the use of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which provides creditable and reliable information. The book looks into the standards movement and how technology played a role in this movement. Also, the author shares classroom experiences, as well as personal experiences, on how he has seen or used technology inside the classroom and what its success rate looked like when used by students.

This book allows for the reader to reflect on whether or not technology should be used inside the classroom so that student success may be improved. I believe that a good book related to education allows you to reflect on its content and on your own practices so that you may make improvements to your own teaching style. This book in fact allows this to happen, resulting in me concluding that this book is valuable. I found it to be helpful to teachers so that they may improve their instructional ways inside their classroom. I hope future readers find it book as useful as I did, especially teachers!

Enjoy!
